Just north of Surfers Paradise, the suburb of Southport borders the dazzling Broadwater. Southport is one of the city’s oldest suburbs - in the 1890s it was where visitors from Brisbane came to enjoy a coastal holiday. Nowadays, it’s the heart of Gold Coast's CBD and while some parts are all about business, Southport offers plenty of leisurely and cultural pursuits too. Shop up a storm at Australia Fair or take a wander through the alleys and Asian eateries of Chinatown. The annual Chinese New Year Celebrations here bring the streets alive with fireworks and a street festival.
The Broadwater is a huge calm water estuary offering peaceful and protected waters for all kinds of watersports from jetskiing to parasailing, kayaking, fishing or boating. Along the shoreline, the sprawling Broadwater Parklands is vast expanse of green public space, dotted with playgrounds, parks, picnic tables and BBQ facilities, making it an ideal destination for picnics, waterplay and socialising in the gorgeous Gold Coast climate. The parklands also host some of the city’s most popular cultural and community events like Christmas Carols and the Gold Coast Show.
