Where To Buy The Best And Freshest Seafood On The Gold Coast

21 Nov 2024

For foodies, there's one major advantage to the Gold Coast's seaside location - fresh and succulent seafood straight from the ocean! Here are some locally loved providers of prawns, bugs, crabs and delicious fish, as fresh as you can get.

Gold Coast Fisherman's Co-op

For the freshest seafood look no further than the Gold Coast Fisherman’s Co-op at Main Beach. They take prawns, fish and crabs from local fishing boats that arrive in early hours of the day from their night trawls and unload their bounty right there for you to buy straight off the boat. This means you could be buying something that has literally been pulled from the ocean only hours before; it doesn’t get any better than this, people!

Location: 168 Seaworld Drive, Main Beach

Sanctuary Cove Prawn Trawler

Looking for top-notch seafood on the Northern Gold Coast? Rise early and head to local’s favourite, the Marine Village at Sanctuary Cove for some of the freshest daily catches straight from the ocean. Green and cooked prawns, bugs and crabs are sold by the kilo and based on their reviews, you’ll certainly be coming back for more.

The Sanctuary Cove Prawn Trawler docks every Saturday morning and sales start from 8.30am at G Pier Marina – check their Facebook page for other docking days. Be sure to get there early to avoid disappointment.

Location: G Pier Marina, Santuary Cove, Hope Island

Reef Seafood and Sushi

Located in the Brickworks at Southport, Reef Seafood and Sushi stocks an extensive range of fresh seafood and Japanses seafood dishes. With a long history in the seafood insustry, the chefs at this family owned business sure know their stuff. Expect expert advice, oysters shucked in store and a dedication to providing the highest quality, whether it’s a beautiful fish fillet or a couple of kilos of prawns.

Location: Brickworks, Ferry Road

Peter’s Fish Market

No list of this nature would be complete without the inclusion of this establishment. Peter’s Fish Market has quite the cult following among Gold Coast locals and for good reason. Situated very close to the Fisherman’s Cooperative at Main Beach, the market also prides itself on getting the best and freshest seafood there is going. Renowned for their incredible fish and chips, which is best enjoyed at the al fresco eating area out the front, with views over the Broadwater.

Location: 130 Seaworld Dr, Main Beach

Charis Seafood

Another super fresh supplier of some incredible seafood is Charis Seafoods in Labrador. The long-time family-owned business makes catering for a large gathering or event quite the breeze. They offer well-priced seafood platters and whole ‘eskies’ with an array of the ocean’s best; perfect for when the sun’s out and the family decide to drop by. And if you’d prefer to save your seafood feast for just two of you, then we won’t judge.

Local tip: Get some fish and chips for lunch and hang around until 1.30 when Charis Brothers feed all their fish scraps to a friendly flock of pelicans on the foreshore.

Location: 371 Marine Parade, Labrador

Tasman Star Seafood Market

This family owned and operated seafood market has three fishing trawlers out at sea, working hard to bring in the freshest catch of fish, prawns, Balmain bugs, squid, octopus and more. Got seafoood on the menu for the festive season? Tasman Star Seafood Market is open from 6am on December 23 for 36 hours non-stop trading so your Christmas feasting can feature some succulent seafood and fish dishes.

Miami Fish Market

Boutique fishmonger, Miami Fish Market, is the hottest place in town for fresh seafood with the most incredible display of responsibly sourced delights straight from the sea. Pull up a stool and tuck into freshly shucked Pacific oysters drizzled with their signature vinaigrette and masterfully sliced sashimi from the oyster and sashimi bar; peruse the cabinets brimming with local delicacies and daily specials; and grab a few gourmet goods to accompany your seafood spread. Open daily.
