Gold Coast Hinterland: Prepare To Be Surprised

There's a moment on the winding drive up to the mountains of the Hinterland when the air changes. You’ve passed roadside stands selling local produce and flowers, the traffic has thinned, and you start to smell what can only be described as the colour green. The beach is still down there somewhere, sparkling away behind you, but up here it might as well be a different destination altogether.

The Hinterland has always felt like the city’s quiet achiever. Quietly humming away in the background, ready to offer up its delights whenever you’re ready to peek behind the curtain. If your perception of the Gold Coast begins and ends at the shoreline, then it’s time to step inland, because you are missing an enormous, ancient, ridiculously beautiful part of the story.

The Short Version

Forty minutes. That's all it takes to swap the sand between your toes for rainforest underfoot, sea breeze for mountain air, beach bars for cellar doors. The Gold Coast has always been generous like that, happy to hand you two entirely different holidays for the price of one. The beach isn't going anywhere. But next time you're here, do yourself a favour and head for the hills. The mountain's been waiting.

Into the Green

Tamborine Mountain and its neighbouring ranges are what's left of an enormous shield volcano that erupted some 23 million years ago (a fun fact to drop at your next dinner party). The rainforest that's grown up in its wake is the real deal: Antarctic beech, strangler figs, waterfalls that have been flowing since long before anyone thought to name them. Springbrook National Park and Lamington National Park make up thousands of hectares of untouched wilderness which visitors can explore on hikes, bushwalks and day trips.

Walking through this unique environment does something to your nervous system. The canopy takes the fierceness of the Australian sun and turns it into a gentle dapple. There’s a certain hush about the Hinterland, punctured by quiet birdsong and rustling leaves, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a sleepy koala high up in the gums, a colourful kingfisher flitting through the branches, or even an elusive echidna. 

Thrill Seekers

Not everyone wants their Hinterland experience quite so meditative, and that’s fair enough. If you're after something with a bit more of a heart-in-mouth feel to it, TreeTop Challenge will have you zip-lining and rope-course-ing your way through the forest like Tarzan, while Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk delivers sweeping views from raised steel bridges that allow you to wander through the canopy. It's proof the Hinterland isn't just for the slow-living crowd, although give it an afternoon and you might be converted to a more sedate pace. The Hinterland has that effect on people.

Wining & Dining

Ten thousand words on Hinterland food and drink alone could still leave plenty of things out. This is a region built for long, unhurried lunches. The kind where you order the second glass without checking your watch. The kind with views for days.

The Paddock at Beechmont Estate (pictured above) is the one to book when you want to feel genuinely spoiled. Think fine dining with paddock-to-plate produce and views that make the wait between courses feel like part of the meal, not an interruption to it. For something a little more come-as-you-are yet still delightfully high end, Franquette Bakery does the kind of pastry work that makes you reconsider your relationship with butter, using local produce that tastes like it was picked that morning, because it probably was. Hint: Try the quiches, and be prepared to line up for them.

Then there's the drinks trail, which deserves its own pilgrimage. Witches Falls Vineyard has been quietly making some of the region's best cool-climate wine for years, best enjoyed slowly, on a deck, with a platter of fresh cheeses. And if spirits are more your thing, Cauldron Distillery is doing genuinely inventive things with gin and rum that locals have known about for a while now. Rest Your Head

It’s 100% worth adding a short stay in the Hinterland to your itinerary, because the mountain after dark is an entirely different experience to the day-trip version. Look up through the cool, clear air to a sky bursting with stars. Read by a crackling fire. Fall asleep to the sounds of the forest. And wake to birdsong and the early morning light spilling across the landscape.

The Hinterland has options for any style of stay from camping to luxury villas. Tamborine Mountain Glades offers a variety of accommodation in a stunning rainforest setting for anyone wanting to properly unplug, from glamping tents to hotel-style rooms, while Beechmont Estate and Veranda House lean into the country-luxe end of things - all crisp linen, mountain views. The Tamborine (pictured) is a refurbished boutique hotel that offers a stylish stay. And Binna Burra Lodge and O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat are beloved eco-retreats on the fringes of the region's National Parks wiht untouched wilderness, waterfalls, wildlife and incredible hiking trails on your doorstep.

Slow Days

If you're the sort who likes a little more structure to your slowness, Mountview Alpaca Farm is exactly as delightful as it sounds. Petting these docile creatures is a genuinely lovely way to spend an hour with kids (or without them!) Pair it with a Peddly Picnic, and you've got the makings of a proper unhurried afternoon: good food, better company, and somewhere green to sit.

If you want to take relaxing to a whole new level SOL Elements Bathhouse & Spa is the place to go. This stunning venue appears to float on the lake it's built on, and surrounded by the native rainforest. Book a soak session and melt stress away in the communal onsen facilities - mineral hot pools, clod plunges, sauna, steam room and Himalyan Salt Cave. For the full experience, indulge in a blissful body treatment, float therapy or rejuvenating facial.

And then there are the lookouts, because no Hinterland trip is complete without at least one moment of standing very still and taking it all in. Hang Glider's Lookout earns its name with views that stretch clear down to the coast, while the aptly titled Best of All Lookout doesn't overrsell itself one bit. On a clear day, you can see the whole sweep of the coastline down to Northern New South Wales.
