The Ultimate First-Timer's Guide to the Gold Coast

30 Oct 2026

Visiting the Gold Coast for the first time? Lucky you! You’re probably wondering how to make the most of your stay and experience all the best bits.

Embrace the Coastal Lifestyle

We’re all about the beach on the Gold Coast. Our coastline is world famous and no trip to the gold coast is complete without immersing yourself in salt water. There are so many ways to experience it though, so choose one that suits you. You can learn to surf at world-famous surfbreaks, or hire a Lime Bike and cruise along the Gold Coast Oceanway. This wide, flat path that runs parallel to the coastline and takes to some of the region's best beaches. Join a whale watching cruise to see humpback whales on their annual migration or simply stroll along the shore. Highly recommended - get up early to watch sunrise over the ocean for a truly magical Gold Coast moment.

Chase Thrills at Theme Parks

This city is home to Australia’s best theme parks and no matter how old you are, a day of rides, slides, rollercoasters, characters and wildlife experiences is a joyful experience. There  are five major theme parks to choose from - Warner Bros Movie World, Sea World, Dreamworld, Wet‘n’Wild, White Water World and Paradise Country. If you can’t decide, get a multi-park pass for an action-packed adventure!

Head For the Hinterland

Our coastline is the star of the show, but we’ve got a gorgeous secret to share - our lush Hinterland. This lush, mountainous region located just 50 minutes drive from central Gold Coast offers a change of pace and scenery. We’re taking World Heritage-listed National Parks, ancient rainforests, waterfalls, hikes, quaint country towns, local produce and natural attractions that will take your breath away. The untamed wilderness possesses a magical quality that will cast its spell on you (and your nervous system).

Dine at a Surf Club

Our surf clubs are the quintessential Gold Coast experience and an absolute must if you love casual seaside dining with uninterrupted ocean views. There’s a surf club in almost every beachside suburb along the Gold Coast from Coolangatta to Main Beach. They’re permanently popular for budget-friendly meals, social sun downers and family-friendly vibes. Try a chicken parmi - it’s considered a local delicacy. Check out our guide to local surf clubs.

Travel writer, Kate Veling, came to the Gold Coast for six months and loved it so much she’s still here 20 years later. The laidback lifestyle suits her to a tee and as a mum of three, she knows all the best parks, swimming spots and kid-friendly fun to be had in her ‘hood. She’s often found getting amongst the thriving local arts and culture scene, dancing to live music or kicking back on the beach, but rest assured it’s all in the name of research.
