ARTS AND CULTURE ON THE GOLD COAST

04 Jan 2018

The Gold Coast is overflowing with creatives and they are certainly making their mark on our beautiful city. From street art murals bringing colour to concrete and live performances bringing music to public spaces, it’s easy to get involved in our coastal cultural wave. If you’re here on a whim, there are dedicated cultural spaces with weekly gigs, galleries and good times, or jump on the front foot and plan your stay around these incredible events throughout the year.

BLEACH* FESTIVAL

Love circus, music, theatre, dance, cabaret and visual arts (who doesn’t)? Well why not time your trip to coincide with the Coast’s signature arts and cultural festival – Bleach* – that rolls into town every March and shines a light on the incredible creativity and culture that lives here.

BLUES ON BROADBEACH

Fancy yourself a bit of a muso? Or don’t mind a good boogie every now and then? Well, you’re in for a seriously good time at the annual Blues on Broadbeach – a three day street festival that transforms Broadbeach every May. Bust out your dancing shoes, warm up those vocal chords and add this event to your social calendar.

HOME OF THE ARTS

The Coast’s cultural heart beats at Home of the Arts– a dedicated artistic precinct that brings the best live theatre, art exhibitions, indie films, stand up comedy and dance to the stage.

SOUND LOUNGE

If you’re partial to a live gig or two, Currumbin’s Sound Lounge is the pick of the bunch when it comes to rocking out to some of the country’s best musical acts in a cool, creek-side setting.

JELLURGAL

Step back in time and immerse yourself in one of Earth’s oldest living civilizations as you discover the Coast’s rich, Aboriginal heritage at Jellurgal Cultural Centre. Sample traditional bush tucker, be immersed in native song and dance and listen to Dreamtime stories of the Yugambeh people.

19 KAREN

The largest contemporary art gallery on the Coast, 19 Karen is a newfangled warehouse space displaying an impressive array of artworks, from innovative expressionistic pieces to brightly coloured pop art paintings, street art murals and more.

THE CRAFT PARLOUR

From Shibori tie-dying to extreme knitting, water colouring and naked cake decorating, this arts and craft studio, The Craft Parlour is the perfect place to release your inner artist, learn some new skills and make some creative goodness with your own two hands.

DUST TEMPLE

If getting in amongst the local creative scene is on your itinerary, head to Dust Temple in Currumbin, a charming converted warehouse space that’s part art gallery, part café, part performance space, all bundled up into one seriously groovy package.

SWELL FESTIVAL

See mighty sculptures rise from the sand in an incredible outdoor art exhibition that only rolls around once a year. Swell Sculpture Festival, one of the Coast’s most extraordinary events, showcases an impressive collection of art works all set against the stunning backdrop of Currumbin Beach.
