There's a moment somewhere between clipping into a harness and stepping off solid ground when the Gold Coast reveals itself completely. Not the way it does from a hotel balcony or a beach towel, however. From 400 metres above a deep rainforest valley, you can gain a whole new perspective of our unique city at its most majestic.
The Setting
Opened in January 2026, Happitat Adventure Park is the world's first cliff park, perched on the escarpments of Binna Burra, deep in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park. The journey there is an experience in itself. Wind up through the Gold Coast Hinterland and the city dissolves behind you, replaced by thick carpets of subtropical rainforest draped over ancient volcanic ridgelines. Waterfalls appear without warning. The air changes. By the time you arrive, you've already started to decompress, and you haven't even got to the cliff yet.
Lamington National Park is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth and a truly ancient landscape with geology dating back more than 225 million years. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, it's one of the most significant rainforest ecosystems on the planet. This place is the real deal wilderness and it's incredible views, abundant wildlife, prehistoric flora, dense forests and raging waterfalls make it a beloved destination for nature lovers, hikers and visitors from all over the world.
Happitat sits lightly within all of this, very much by design. Founded by conservationist and adventurer Michael Neururer, the park has invested over a million dollars in environmental restoration, stabilising bushfire-affected cliff faces, planting native species, and running a zero-waste operation. Every bolt, every cable, every carabiner has been selected for minimal footprint and a 100-year lifespan, which makes it the kind of adventure you can feel genuinely good about having. We love an ethical nature experience.
The Experience
The cliff park itself is a sequence of challenges built directly into the rock. Think ziplines, climbs, suspension bridges, tightrope crossings, and log scrambles, all connected by a continuous safety system so you're never unclipped. Guides are the real backbone of the experience, offering up coaching, cheering, and assisting you in exploring your own personal edges as well as the literal ones. To help facilitate the best guest-to-guide ratio, numbers are kept low, and the pace is unhurried. If you feel the need for speed - shoot across the canyon on a zipline with the wind in your face and your heart pumping. If you prefer a slower pace (but still thrilling so high up in the air) opt for the Arete Via Ferrata where you scale the cliff face on a series of steel rungs, cables and ladders.
Between challenges, the park opens up into something quieter. Boardwalks wind through shaded forest and alongside mountain streams, and you can pause in natural picnic clearings to catch your breath (or gather your courage). The Walden Café serves its tasty fare exclusively to Happitat visitors, so even the coffee break has a sense of occasion. Named by Time Out as the fourth-best experience in the world for 2026, Happitat is doing something genuinely rare by making the natural world accessible to people who might otherwise never know it in this up close and personal way.
And that accessibility matters. Not everyone who arrives on the Gold Coast heads for the hinterland, and not every visitor looks to test their limits. But Happitat makes a compelling argument that they should.
Getting There
Happitat is located on the Binna Burra Cultural Landscape, approximately 55 minutes from the Gold Coast city centre. Park at the dedicated Happitat car park at 1696 Beechmont Rd, Beechmont, where a shuttle bus then takes you a further 20 minutes up the mountain. Have your ticket ready to show the driver.
Safety
Happitat uses the world's most advanced safety system: the LockD Clip smart belay system, which ensures guests can never disconnect from the safety line until the designated exit point. All cliff elements are engineered with high-strength materials built for a 100-year lifespan. Guides are trained professionals who coach guests through every element. No special skills or physical strength are required, just a willingness to give it a go. You'll get a run on practice course before you begin so you know exactly how the safety system operates. Height minimum 120cm; weight maximum 130kg for zipline experiences. Visit the website for bookings, session times and FAQs.
