The Mayor's Student Ambassador program means being part of and representing this city that I love living in. I want to connect with the most people I can through volunteering and I welcome the opportunity to give back to the Gold Coast community.
I completed an Economics degree in Brazil, and am now studying at Griffith University. I considered universities in Brisbane but I love the Gold Coast's weather (like home) and vibrant energy – it's a holiday-like paradise with all the perks of city life. There’s a good work/life balance and the quality of education is highly regarded.
My first major challenge was adapting to the Australian teaching methodology. While Brazilian education follows the American style with frequent tests, here the approach is self-learning. I take pride and confidence in consistently delivering what I set my mind to achieve.
I'm a gym enthusiast, surfer, and I absolutely love working while seeing my productivity grow.
Fei (Sophia) Xue
China — Juris Doctor, Bond University
Fei (Sophia) Xue
I’m currently in my Juris Doctor(JD) program, building expertise in Australian law to make a meaningful impact in the legal field. When choosing where to study, I looked at top universities in Sydney and Melbourne, but after being in Australia for more than five years, I ultimately chose to study on the Gold Coast for the unique combination of academic excellence, vibrant lifestyle and natural beauty.
As an international student, forming new social connections was challenging at first. I stepped out of my comfort zone, joining events, which helped me build meaningful friendships and feel at home. Now, the Gold Coast feels like a close-knit family where students from all backgrounds come together, share ideas, and grow - creating an environment where I can thrive both personally and academically.
Being a Mayor’s Student Ambassador means representing my peers and helping other students feel connected and supported. It’s an opportunity to give back and contribute to the university. I’m always excited by new experiences, and this role offers the chance to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and explore fresh ideas. I can’t wait to embrace the adventures ahead.

Living in the Gold Coast has been my dream, so it’s an honour to represent this beautiful city and share it with others.
I started my course last January, and I'm currently in my second term, so I'm still at the beginning of my Master's course. I thought Australia was a great place to grow academically and gain global experience. Southern Cross University’s 6-week term learning model fits my goals of balancing life and study.
The Gold Coast offers stunning nature and solid infrastructure, plus a great education. I saw strong potential for growth in both diversity and active, healthy living. The active lifestyle, friendly culture and relaxed vibe keep me motivated and happy. Studying here often feels like being on a holiday.
In 2022 I won first prize at an Australia education expo - a free flight to Australia! It felt like fate and that’s when I decided to start my studies here. Being a Mayor's Student Ambassador means a chance to immerse myself in Australian culture while studying nursing. It helps me build communication and leadership skills for my future in the healthcare field.

I aim to build connections, bridge communities, celebrate diversity and inspire students to make the most of here. The city’s welcoming community, beaches, and thriving student culture make it feel like home. I love the Gold Coast’s diverse environment, where innovation and inclusivity thrive.
I chose Griffith University as it focuses on learning, connections and innovation, gaining real-world skills extended beyond the classroom and fosters a community where diversity is welcomed and supported. Gold Coast campus is an unmatched study experience, blending academic excellence with a vibrant lifestyle.
Some of the challenges I faced as an international student were cultural adaptation, homesickness, and job market challenges. I overcame them by embracing diversity, building connections, seeking support, and staying resilient and proactive. I am deeply passionate about poetry and writing. Storytelling allows me to express my experiences and connect with people across cultures, reinforcing my belief in the power of communication.

I am currently in my second and last year of the Master of International Tourism and Hospitality Management.
I chose to study on the Gold Coast because Griffith University ranks first in tourism and hospitality studies in Australia, and because the Gold Coast is the tourism capital of Australia.

I am passionate about arts and culture, especially dance. I love learning and performing traditional and modern dance, and have performed in various multicultural events on the Gold Coast.
The most challenging aspect of being an international student for me is navigating life as a resident - things like applying for a rental and doing taxes. To overcome it I actively sought information from uni support and friends. Representing international students certainly heightened my sense of belonging to this city.
Being a Mayor's Student Ambassador will help me grow personally and professionally. Stemming from my love for GC, I wish to share the journey and inspire other students to enjoy student life to the fullest, say yes to every chance, and immerse themselves in the adventure the Gold Coast has to offer.

I value having an active and healthy lifestyle so having the opportunity to study my passion while being able to enjoy the lifestyle I love made this decision very easy.

The Gold Coast's stunning landscape, from beaches to skyline, drew me in. SCU offered the course I wanted, plus the city provided ample opportunities to grow. What I love the most is the people here. While the place is amazing, it's the friendliness of everyone that stands out. There's also an opportunity to follow my passions and grow, even while studying. I chose to study on the Gold Coast as Griffith University is one of the only universities that offers Canadian law between Australia and the UK. The thing that excites me about studying here is the multitude of opportunities to experience new things, and to overall better yourself. I have tried so many new things and the work life balance cannot be beat.
Overall, the move to the Gold Coast has been a smooth transition. I miss my family at certain times, but everyone is only a FaceTime away and keeping myself busy helps.
Through my role as Mayor’s Student Ambassador, I want to create change for present and future international students and ensure no one feels alone through the hardships of studying abroad. The people I’ve already met have been so inspiring and I can’t wait to see what I learn from this experience.

I considered studying in Brisbane to be near relatives, but I see studying abroad as a chance to grow independently so I chose a different city nearby to balance independence and family support. Gold Coast offers stunning beaches, relaxed vibe and lovely local people along with great support from the local government and university for students make my student life here easier.
As a new international student, I struggled to make friends when I first came here, so I joined university clubs to meet like-minded people. Being selected as a MSA is a great opportunity to connect students with the community.

When I was deciding on where to study, Gold Coast won me over with its values and lifestyle that perfectly align with mine. It’s exactly what I was looking for: a place to grow and improve, with nature, community, and a fresh start.Gold Coast gave me space to grow away from my bubble, welcoming me during my adult transformation. Its multicultural environment, study opportunities and balanced lifestyle shape my global vision.
My biggest challenge has been feeling truly belonging in a new place. I haven’t fully overcome it yet, but I make an effort to engage in new contexts, building references that counter this feeling. I have over 45 original playlists on Spotify for different moods and inspirations, and I listen to all of them regularly. Music is my go-to for every moment!
Being a Mayor's Student Ambassador means sharing my growth journey and inspiring others. It's about helping students navigate new environments, build connections, and embrace personal transformation. I know these amazing opportunities will transform me - I’ve never been more open to growth and change.

Before 2023, I'd never been to Australia - the Gold Coast became both my introduction to the country and my first experience living abroad. I chose Gold Coast for its perfect weather, laid-back lifestyle, and fewer crowds—ideal for focusing on studies while enjoying life. What I love most is the welcoming community and the opportunities to volunteer and work with amazing organizations here.
When I first moved here, living alone was tough — juggling cooking, studies, work and projects led to burnout. But beach walks and sunny mornings kept me balanced.

I'm currently studying year 2 of the Doctor of Medicine program at Griffith University. I wanted to live an active healthy lifestyle and this city has the perfect balance of tranquility and vibrancy. I enjoy surfing then grabbing brekky with friends at Kirra during the week. The amazing doctor program by Griffith University was a drawcard and studying at the Griffith Health Centre is awesome too.
I struggled with the culture barrier when I moved here. At first I was overwhelmed by how sociable the Australians are. I remember struggling to engage in small talk with strangers, but now I step out of my comfort zones and start chatting.
I hope to be a good example of the Gold Coast student lifestyle and let international students know about all the benefits of living and studying here. I'm looking forward to having new experiences alongside life-minded friends from the program.

The lifestyle, the beaches, the mix of nature, the multicultural environment, and the opportunities to connect with people from all over the world make this city truly special. I love starting my day with a run next to the beach, watching the sunrise, and taking advantage of the opportunities the Gold Coast has to offer.

I am currently a first year medical science and doctor of medicine student at Griffith University. I was keen on studying closer to home in Canada and considered moving to the UK for school, but when I received my offer at Griffith University, I knew it was an opportunity of a lifetime.
I chose to study here due to its inclusive culture. It still feels like home for me because of the welcoming people around. In addition it’s the perfect place to have a balanced student life. Studying on the Gold Coast has been a dream for me. It’s a lively environment with something to do almost everyday. The best part is definitely its promising sunny weather and the beach being just a tram stop away.
Missing my family is definitely the biggest challenge. Coming straight from high school, it was a big change to adapt to this lifestyle, but I’ve met a lot of supportive people who made it easier.
I am very grateful to be Mayor Student Ambassador. It gives me a chance to represent the voice of international students around the Gold Coast. I’m excited to be working along with other like minded students sharing this new experience and to make connections through networking.
